Foliage Report: October 28, 2019

By Vermont.com StaffOct. 28, 2019

We enjoyed a spectacular foliage season in Vermont this year. By now, most of the state is considered "past peak," with a only few hidden pockets of color left. Any remaining color won't last long now, and as we move thru "stick season," the chill in the air is a reminder that a white blanket of snow will soon be upon us. "Winter is Coming!"

The Vermont.com Foliage Reports are first-hand reports provided by volunteers from around the state. We hope you've enjoyed reading this year's reports as much as we've enjoyed sharing them!

If you couldn't make it to Vermont this fall, you can still find some gorgeous fall scenery in our Autumn Photo Gallery, thanks to local photographers and visitors to Vermont. But truly, you've got to be here to fully enjoy the leaves. And remember, it's never too early to plan your next fall vacation!

FOLIAGE REPORTS FROM AROUND THE STATE

Vermont Foliage MapThe "Current Conditions" map provides an approximate view of the current foliage color in Vermont, based on the reports we receive.

Foliage color generally starts to change in the higher, cooler areas of the Green Mountains, spreading down into the Lake Champlain Valley and Connecticut River Valley, and moving from north to south across the state. The exact timing of the color change varies from year to year.

NORTHERN VERMONT:

October 24, 2019
"As leaves begin to fall, Vermont will be entering 'stick season.' This is a time where things are waiting, hesitating as the temperatures drop lower and lower. We see the branches begin to shutter in the wind and slowly the landscape turns into a black and white photograph. With color stripped from the mountains, the trees sit stark against the electric blue sky. Stick season tells us that very soon, snow will be here, and will stay for a while."

CENTRAL VERMONT:

Fall Foliage near the Red Clover Inn "As we move into mid autumn, there is still a bit of bronze and gold to be seen in the valleys. With November knocking on the door, it is time to cozy up at the Clover - enjoy the hearth, and linger with friends or a date over drinks and dinner. We hope you will join us for dinner, a romantic evening, or a stay at the inn. Thank you for your support, and cheers to Vermont!"

-- Carol Ryan, Red Clover Inn & Restaurant, Mendon, VT

SOUTHERN VERMONT:

October 28, 2019
Fall Foliage at Stratton Mountain Resort "With the weekend’s heavy rain all color has been washed from the mountainside. Lonely, barren branches now sit quiet, patiently waiting for snow. Fortunately, they will not have to wait long. Our projected opening day is November 23rd, with events from the Coca-Cola Holiday Caravan arrival to the annual Gobble Wobble 5k and Village Stroll jumpstarting our winter season. In the meantime, hiking, shopping in the village, and eagerly preparing for winter excites our guests. For a complete list of Events and Activities take a look at our events calendar and of course stay up-to-date with us on Facebook and Instagram. We will leave you with one of our favorite shots from this Fall. See you when the snow flies!"

-- Luke Robins, Stratton Mountain Resort, Bondville, VT

Fall Foliage in Southern Vermont "We are in 'stick season' here in Southern Vermont, with only a few trees clinging to their remaining leaves. It's been a beautiful season this year, possibly one of the most vibrant I can remember. I'm looking forward to seeing the colors again next year!"

-- Renee-Marie Smith, Vermont.com, Manchester, VT

STATEWIDE SUMMARY:

October 23, 2019
Vermont Foliage by the Department of Tourism "The final act of this year's spectacular foliage display is upon us, but the show isn't over quite yet. Even in places where most of the leaves have fallen, brushstrokes of yellow and orange remain. Late-turning aspens and oaks are holding color and green leaves persist on some oak and beech trees in lower elevations. As color along hillsides and mountains subsides, evergreens become more noticeable as the dominant feature of forested scenery for the months ahead.

Bests Bets for Color: Hiking, trout fishing, or biking gravel roads in the Champlain and Connecticut Valleys.

Pleasantly seasonal temperatures this week will provide continued opportunities to get outside and appreciate this season of transition!"

-- Vermont Department of Tourism & Marketing
