Hartford is a town in Windsor County, of the "Woodstock-Quechee" region, located on the New Hampshire border, near the intersection of I-89 and I-91. The town has five villages: Hartford, Quechee, West Hartford, White River Junction and Wilder. It is assumed that this town is named for Hartford, Connecticut, since some of the grantees and many later settlers came from there.

Some notable people of the area include: Phillips Lord, a radio writer & motion picture actor; William Strong, a congressman; Andrew Tracy (1797–1868), a congressman; Joseph Tracy, a leading figure in the American Colonization Society; Horace Wells, a dentist & pioneering anesthesiologist; and Mitchell Ota, a noted national champion pistol shooter.
