Berkshire is a town in Franklin County, of the "Islands & Farms" region and contains the unincorporated village of East Berkshire.
Berkshire was one of six towns authorized by the legislature in the spring of 1780 as a way to raise money to supply Vermont's troops. The first man named in both the petition and the subsequent charter was William Goodrich of Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Massachussetts, a Captain in the militia which had marched to Lexington in 1775.
