The town includes two incorporated villages, Barton and Orleans.

Some notable people from Barton include: Revolutionary War Officer & founder of Barton, Colonel William Barton; 69th Governor of Vermont, Lee E. Emerson; 46th Governor of Vermont, Josiah Grout; engineer & creator of both the Cadillac and Lincoln automobile brands, Henry M.
