Vermont.

Athens is a town in Windham County in southern Vermont. Spelled Athans in its charter, it is not known who might have suggested the name, or why. The modern local pronunciation incorporates "A", as in "Nathan".

An episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was filmed in Athens, to build a new house for the Vitale family, in September 2007. The episode aired December 9, 2007, on ABC.

A notable person from the area is James McMillan Shafter, jurist & legislator.
