Ira is a town in Rutland County, of the Rutland-Killington region. The town was named for Ira Allen, brother of Ethan Allen, who fought with the Green Mountain Boys in the Revolutionary War.
Ira was originally referred to as the "District of Ira" in a petition from settlers who wanted a grant for the area. It is unknown if the grant was ever actually made, because there is no record of one, however it is possible the charter may have been destroyed when the State House at Montpelier burned in January of 1857.
