Castleton is a town in Rutland County, located about 15 miles to the west of Rutland, and about 7 miles east of the New York/Vermont state border, and is home to Castleton State College, a public liberal arts college.

Some notable people from the area include: Alexander W. Buel, a Michigan congressman; Edwin Drake, an oil driller, popularly credited with starting the U.S. oil industry; Chauncey Langdon, a congressman; Doc Maynard, a Seattle founder; Ron Powers, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, novelist, & non-fiction writer; and Samuel Shaw, a congressman.
