Irasburg Vermont is one of three Vermont towns named for Ira Allen. It is a town in Orleans County, located in the beautiful and scenic Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, an area that National Geographic selected as part of their geotourism program for sustainable destinations. The town contains four unincorporated villages: Beebe Plain, Clyde Pond, Lake Salem and North Derby; and two incorporated villages: Derby Center and Derby Line.
The Irasburg area is ideal for year-round recreation activities, including skiing at nearby Jay Peak, snowmobiling along VAST trails, and the lakes are ideal for boating, swimming, and fishing during the warmer months. Of course, don't forget the spectacular display of color during the Fall Foliage season!
Some notable people from Irasburg include author Howard Frank Mosher and impressionist landscape painter Theodore Robinson. The town was in the national news in 2010 when it appeared that "Pete the Moose" was going to be destroyed for theoretically carrying disease, in addition to the law that "tamed" wildlife is not allowed in Vermont. The Vermont legislature crafted a law that spared the moose's life.
