2021 Fall Foliage: Colors Continue to Grow

By Vermont.com StaffSep. 30, 2021

September 30, 2021
Vermont is getting great leaf color throughout the state now. We've had some sunny warm days, a bit of rain, and cool nights, which is a perfect mix for beautiful foliage color. The next few days should be stunning in many areas, with the extreme northern parts of the state possibly starting to hit their peak by this weekend. Keep checking back here as we continue to gather foliage reports from our "Leaf Squad" for foliage conditions throughout Vermont. We will try to update our reports once a week, on Thursdays.

If you can't make it to Vermont during this year's Fall Foliage Season, you can find some gorgeous Vermont Fall scenery in our Autumn Photo Gallery, thanks to local photographers and visitors to Vermont. But truly, you've got to be here to fully enjoy the leaves. And remember, it's never too late to plan a fall vacation in Vermont!

Foliage color generally starts to change in the higher, cooler areas, spreading down into the valleys, and moving from north to south across the state.

'Peak' colors can be found at many different times & places as the season progresses, and the timing varies from year to year, based on the weather.

Beyond leaf peeping, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Vermont’s mountains, meadows and villages during the fall. "We have a mixed bag of color change. Definitely you can see it in the higher elevations and on select trees in lower sections. It was quite warm on Saturday with a mix of sun & clouds. Sunday was cooler and cleared off to be very pleasant. The color is really going to explode this week. The photos attached were taken right here on the Stoweflake property over the weekend. The picture with the red tree has been in full glory for over a week now."

"Things are starting to turn at Okemo resort in Ludlow, especially the tops of trees. These pictures from Sept. 26 were taken from Okemo Ridge Road and an overlook on Mountain Road towards the top of the mountain."

-- Russell, Leaf Peeper

SOUTHERN VERMONT:

Stratton - Zach Gould - Fall Mountain - 20210929
Photographer: Zach Gould

"We have seen more vibrance in the trees this week, as it is truly looking like leaf season in Vermont. The colors are noticeable from anywhere on the mountain, and on a drive down any scenic southern Vermont road. Favorite fall hues are beginning to fill in the canopies more and more each day. We have seen the reds really pop in the leaves, as we are now seeing the first signs of strong yellows and golden tones up in the treetops. It’s a great weekend to enjoy a Scenic Gondola Ride through the foliage and up to the summit of Stratton."

Stratton Mountain Resort

September 29, 2021 in Manchester, VT

Manchester View - Robin Green - 092921"Leaf-peeping 2021 is gradual; we've been lucky in that Mother Nature hasn't hit us with a big storm, so the leaves are staying on the trees longer. While there's still much green on the Manchester View property, leaves at the top of our trees are starting to change. Along the way to the hotel on Route 7A, the area's leaves are turning orange and yellow. Soon, our mountain views will be autumnally colorful!"

The Manchester View

"The orange leaves are starting to pop in my area of Southern Vermont!"

STATEWIDE:

September 29, 2021
"Vermont’s foliage display is underway in all parts of the state, and the annual show is progressing according to anticipated patterns. Color is most pronounced in the northeastern region of the state, and pockets of the Northeast Kingdom are fast approaching peak and will likely be at peak conditions this weekend. Early to mid-season color continues to progress nicely elsewhere in the state, while the southern tier and western region are still experiencing early stages.

Green and gold grace the Champlain Valley, as many species hang on to their summer leaves and box elder and ash begin to turn. Red maples everywhere showcased their vibrant reds early and show no sign of letting up. Recent cold snaps at night and gentle rain have amplified the season, and if bright, sunny days and cold nights continue, color could pop quickly. The season has progressed nicely, and if the weather continues to cooperate, brace yourself for the next level in the days and weeks to come!"

-- Mike Snyder, Commissioner of Forest, Parks and Recreation,
Vermont Department of Tourism
