2020 Foliage Season: Color is Beginning to Pop!

By Vermont.com StaffSep. 24, 2020

September 24, 2020
"Happy 1st Week of Fall! Color is beginning to take off from north to south. The mountains are still pretty green, but there is a blush of yellow, orange, and red that promises to become brighter every day. The cooler nights will hopefully spur more color change and ramp up the reds. It seems that each village has a few sentinel maples that are giving us a preview of what's to come by showing off colors bright enough you'll want to pull over and enjoy it for a moment. Keep checking back here as we continue to gather information from our "Leaf Squad" to report foliage conditions throughout the state!

Reports are typically updated weekly, on THURSDAYS.

Between reports, you can find some gorgeous Vermont Fall scenery in our Autumn Photo Gallery, thanks to local photographers and visitors to Vermont. But truly, you've got to be here to fully enjoy the leaves. And remember, it's never too late to plan a fall vacation in Vermont!

Foliage color generally starts to change in the higher, cooler areas, spreading down into the valleys, and moving from north to south across the state.

'Peak' colors can be found at many different times & places as the season progresses, and the timing varies from year to year, based on the weather.

Beyond leaf peeping, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Vermont’s mountains, meadows and villages during the fall. Stratton Foliage 09-22-20"In the blink of an eye tree's 'thinking about changing' have debuted their most brilliant reds and oranges while others are slower to show off their stuff. In the commons, pictured above, this is exactly the case. Deep orange and yellows dot the calm grassy area, standing shoulder to shoulder with others waiting for peak season to show off their color.

Around the resort, fall has been creeping in. Though we are still in the early stages of our foliage turn. Looking up the mountain and down the golf course, one would think we are near peak with the amount of color, but for each fully turned tree there are several still clinging to shades of green.

For now, color is best seen strolling through the village. Mountain Biking and Scenic Gondola rides give hints at what's to come.

Visit our website and stay up-to-date on latest travel guidance."

Barnstead Inn Foliage 09-23-20"Today the sun began to set against the backdrop of lightly changing foliage at the East Of Equinox Farm in Manchester, VT where I, innkeeper of the Barnstead Inn keep my horses. After cooking a delicious, farm-to-table breakfast that we serve daily to our inn guests, I escape here. However, tonight I came here while my daughter played soccer at the recreational park across the street from the Barnstead and enjoyed the sunset on the hayfield as my horses each had a chance to graze the lush green grass with the flock of Canadian Geese. I’m very fortunate to live in such a beautiful place for me and my family! This week there are mild hues of yellow appearing on the mountains.

Last week on Friday, we were able to open our calendars for 100% occupancy. Those of you still hoping to get to Manchester to see it... now might be your opportunity before those few vacancies that remain fill up. I urge you to try our pop-up wood fired pizza night this Saturday from 4-8pm (check our social media for updates and more pop-ups). It’s outdoor only, so dress accordingly. Full bar with cocktail specials and artisan pizza, plus our fire bowl and fire table will be lit, see you then!"

The Barnstead Inn

The Copper Grouse Redux
By Linda WarnerJan. 2, 2018
When we first visited The Copper Grouse in the Taconic Hotel in Manchester last fall, we vowed to return. And, last Friday night, we fulfilled that promise. The first thing we noticed was that the restaurant (indeed, the entire hotel) was exceptionally busy as it was the end of school vacation week. The atmosphere was […]
